From Toy to Technology: The SLINKY and Smalley Wave Springs

~Exploring the shared manufacturing techniques behind the beloved SLINKY and Smalley’s innovative wave springs and retaining rings~

Fans of the popular QI programme hosted by Stephen Fry will have seen a puzzled panel recently being subjected to the SLINKY test! This toy which became an overnight sensation in the early 1940’s, was invented by an American naval engineer Richard James and demonstrated in a Pennsylvania apartment store where it became an instant sell-out. Although originally intended as a child’s toy, its ability to entertain adults for decades has ensured its longevity and can still be purchased today (Amazon at £6.49!!!)

Interestingly, the same technology used to manufacture the SLINKY, is employed in the production of our Smalley Wave Springs and Retaining Rings. By coiling a wide variety of flat wire materials on edge to exact dimensions and configurations, a vast range of sizes and sections can be produced to solve an unlimited number of sophisticated engineering application problems.
